The Boxel 3D level editor is inspired by lots of great editors and tools. Since I spend most my time in VS Code, I wanted to capture the same UI aesthetic and interaction, and include it in the level editor. In a strange way, VS Code has become my “home”, so I think it’s important to reproduce the same experience in the 3D world.
To reduce eye strain on brighter screens, I originally designed the UI to match the “dark” theme created by Microsoft. After designing this website (boxel3d.com), I started to miss the clean look of the “light” theme, and decided to make that an option within the level editor.
